Kalignite CE Software Provides an
Open Standards Development Platform for
Windows CE on Automated Teller Machines

Edinburgh, Scotland - Oct. 31, 2001 -- KAL today announced the availability of Kalignite CE for ATMs. The new software is based on Microsoft’s Windows CE operating system and provides a complete platform for automated teller machines, kiosks and other types of self-service machines.

Kalignite CE is designed to provide very powerful features on self-service systems using a minimum of resources such as CPU and storage, while exploiting open standards for maximum inter-operability. Many of the self-service machines in use today - particularly automated teller machines located away from a bank’s premises - run proprietary software on low-end CPUs. One of the key factors in the design of these machines is to provide basic functionality at a very low cost. With Kalignite CE the manufacturers of these machines can now provide complete entry-level systems that offer a graphical, feature-rich transaction set based on the widely used Windows operating system at very competitive prices.

“We delivered Beta versions of Kalignite CE in September to some of our OEM partners who represent a large segment of the ATM market, so we are very far along in our development process ” says Aravinda Korala, Chief Executive Officer of KAL. “Our business model at KAL is to work with all of the ATM hardware manufacturers. We are continuing that policy with Kalignite CE and we are now making it generally available to all interested self-service OEMs and systems integrators,” he added.

Kalignite CE complements KAL’s already released Kalignite system that is used on thousands of the world’s self-service machines running Microsoft NT or Windows 2000 operating systems. Prior to the release of Kalignite CE, many owners of ATMs were forced to deploy systems that were totally incompatible with one another and used multiple operating systems and incompatible applications. Together, Kalignite and Kalignite CE can drive the entire range of self-service machines from the entry-level single function cash dispensers to high-end, full-function ATMs that offer comprehensive financial services.

In addition to targeting Kalignite CE for use with new machines, KAL has designed it to operate on previous generations of ATMs. This will provide the owners of older ATMs with the option of upgrading their system’s software without necessarily having to incur the costs of major hardware changes that an upgrade to Windows 2000/XP could entail.
