Edinburgh, 14 May 1999 - Microsoft's vision
for e-commerce on the net is being realised through new developments
such as KAL's innovative Kalignite software for creating web-ready
applications on Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and kiosks.
Kalignite allows new applications to be developed
using web technologies such as dynamic HTML and ActiveX. Consisting
of ActiveX objects running on the CEN XFS 2.0 standard, Kalignite
allows applications to run within Microsoft's Internet Explorer
browser. The XFS standard, which was previously known as WOSA
XFS, defines a way of accessing ATM and self-service hardware
in a vendor independent manner. Kalignite's ability to combine
XFS with the web allows e-commerce transactions to be delivered
through any XFS compliant ATM or kiosk alongside traditional
cash dispensing transactions.
Dr Aravinda Korala, Managing Director of
KAL says: "Think about all those web-sites offering electronic
services ranging from airline tickets to the delivery of flowers...
But not everyone has access... ATMs on the otherhand are on
the streets today - they are trusted and they can deliver.
Self service machines like these compliment online access
at home by providing e-commerce in public places for all.
The ability to deliver value to the consumer, for instance
by printing an airline ticket, makes this a unique delivery
channel."
Innovisions (Mr Payroll), the US company
that developed the first ever automated cheque cashing service
has chosen this new technology for it's new generation of
ATMs. These ATMs will be powered by Microsoft's Windows NT
operating system including the Internet Explorer browser running
on KAL's Kalignite platform, allowing the rapid introduction
of new transactional services and new screen content. Mr Craig
Forrest, Innovisions' VP of Technology said "The ATM channel
is critical for our business. Internet Technologies coupled
with the ATM delivery-channel open up a huge range of opportunities
for us".
Ashley Steele, Microsoft's EMEA retail banking
industry manager comments "Self service devices in the past
have been an invaluable channel for banks to reach out to
their customers. By adopting Microsoft's Windows NT platform
and the underlying COM technology KAL have shown how this
channel can be part of an integrated delivery channel concept
- reaping the benefits of being able to create a suite of
objects that can be reused across multiple delivery channels."
