Citibank China win contactless card race thanks to KAL

China is now the first Citibank country to implement contactless card transactions across its China ATM network.

Customers can now choose between the traditional ‘latched dip’ and new contactless surface reader during transactions.

A successful pilot, KAL's first collaboration with contactless readers was completed in February allowing Citibank to comply fully with the PBOC (People’s Bank of China) mandate to provide contactless card acceptance on all ATMs.

The contactless reader still carries out a two-step authentication process in compliance with the EMV standard.

Running live with KAL’s K3A application, the card sits on the reader throughout the session rather than being locked inside the ATM – with a single ‘quick-tap’ variation to be supported this year.

Citibank, a foreign acquiring bank running KAL ATM software, will now start issuing IC cards in China.
