KAL has set out its recommendations for migration of bank ATMs to Windows 10.
The key date that banks need to keep in mind is January 2020, as this is the end of life for Windows 7. It is therefore essential that banks plan to upgrade their software before then. Banks that fail to update to Windows 10 make themselves vulnerable to the following risks:
- Discontinuation of regular updates
- Loss of ongoing security patches
- Greater vulnerability to cyberattacks
- PCI noncompliance
- A reduction in the overall security of terminals and therefore risk to reputation.
KAL was instrumental in the development of ATMIA’s white paper, ‘Windows 10: What’s New – What’s Happening’, which highlights the importance of ATM owners planning for the migration.
Our key recommendations for the technical requirements for migrating ATMs are as follows:
- Ideal ATM hardware specifications include:
- Processor: 1 GHz or faster with support for PAE, NX and SSE2
- 64 bit system
- RAM: 2 GB or better
- Hard disk space: 50 GB or better
- Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
- Minimum security requirements include:
- TPM 1.2 or better
- Secureboot support (requires UEFI)
- Device Guard support (requires IOMMU chipset)
- It is essential that the ATM hardware is capable of supporting Windows 10. KAL’s understanding is that CPUs older than a few years are not officially supported to run Windows 10. Banks should approach their ATM hardware vendors for more details.
- The recommended Operating System is Windows 10 IoT (Internet of Things) Enterprise 64-bit edition. This includes all the security features banks will need from Microsoft.
